Tribes & Rhinos of northern Kenya - October 2026

Photography voyage in October 2026

Organized by Kirsten Frost we did a 3 weeks photography tour starting at Lake Turkana with 2 weeks of camping in remote areas of northern Kenya to meet colorful tribal people like the Turkana, El Molo, Rendile and Samburu.

The adventure started with a scenic private charter flight from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to Lake Turkana - the world's largest desert lake. We explored the daily lives of local tribes, including the El Molo and Turkana people with early morning village visits and photo sessions at the shore of the lake.

After 3 nights in the heat and winds of Lake Turkana we departed from the rocky terrain for a 4 -hour drive into Kurungu, nestled in the picturesque Ndoto and Nyiro Mountains, a lush and green oasis. This serene retreat offers an intimate look into the lives of the Samburu and Rendille tribes. The next morning we venture out into the heart of the Great Rift Valley, where soaring peaks clash with great expanses of desert barely touched by man.

After 2 nights at Kurungu we soon enter the vast expanse of the Chalbi Desert (meaning “bare & salty” in the Gabra dialect). There aren’t large sand dunes here, but rather an extreme arid landscape with shimmering salt flats. The early morning and evening light will help you capture the desert’s ethereal beauty with its vast, otherworldly expanse of cracked earth.

We finally conclude our epic northern Kenya photography tour in style at Saruni’s Basecamp Samburu lodge, located in the breathtaking Kalama Conservancy.

Then we continued with our private extension program focused on rhinos. First stop was Ol Pejeta game reserve for one night to meet the last two remaining northern white rhinos on earth. This was a breathtaking adventure on its own.

We continued our journey with 4 nights at Solio Game Reserve for more rhino interactions. We also hoped for leopard in the fever trees - but no success on that.

Finally we stayed for 3 more nights at Lake Nakuru NP for lions and another leopard in these many fever tree forests. We tried very hard but only got the leopard at the very last morning game drive.
